Small Learning Communities and Resource Areas
The two new Waverly-Shell Rock Elementary Schools are designed around small learning communities that foster collaboration and personalized learning. Each grade level is grouped strategically, with Kindergarten classrooms located near key amenities such as the playground, commons, kitchen, and gymnasium. First and second-grades share the same floor as Kindergarten, while third and fourth-grade classrooms are closer to the Media Center, situated on the lower floor. These communities are enriched with various resource areas, including shared rooms between classrooms and spaces outside classrooms designated for small group work. This layout encourages interaction, flexibility, and engagement among students.
Sustainable and High-Performance Features
Energy efficiency is at the heart of the Waverly-Shell Rock Elementary Schools. The HVAC system is designed to be highly efficient, and all lighting is LED, reducing energy consumption. The exterior walls and roof assemblies meet or exceed code minimums in their R ratings, ensuring optimal insulation and energy performance.
Maximizing natural daylight was a key consideration in the design of the new buildings, both for its energy efficiency benefits and its proven impact on student performance. North Ridge and Prairie West are oriented at an angle to capture the most daylight throughout the day, ensuring bright and inviting learning spaces. A prime example of this daylight strategy is the glass wall in the gym, which not only illuminates the space but also connects physical education activities with the outdoors. The operable wall between the gym and commons adds versatility, allowing for large events and gatherings in a naturally lit environment.
Secure, Functional, and Inclusive Design
Safety and functionality are integral to the design of these schools. The secure entrance sequence requires all visitors to pass through the office, where they must be buzzed in by staff, ensuring controlled access to the building. Classrooms are thoughtfully designed with both a teaching area and a designated space for small group or floor time, supporting varied learning activities. For the youngest students in Kindergarten through second grade, in-classroom restrooms provide convenience and accessibility.
The site design at the new schools prioritizes safety and efficiency with separate drop-off zones for parents and buses. The south side of each school is designated for parent drop-off, featuring a queuing lane that loops the perimeter to eliminate the need for children to cross traffic. The north side is reserved for buses, keeping parent vehicles and buses separate to enhance safety. Playgrounds are equipped with inclusive play equipment and rubber fall protection surfaces, ensuring that all children can play safely and together. Wayfinding in the school uses tactile finishes to promote learning through touch and assist students who may have visual disabilities. Additionally, each classroom is equipped with an audio enhancement system to support students with hearing impairments, creating an inclusive learning environment for all.
Shell Rock Elementary: Enhancing Connectivity and Learning Spaces
The renovation of Shell Rock Elementary focused on enhancing the connectivity between classroom wings and transforming the Media Center corridor into an active, engaging space. The Media Center was intentionally planned to serve as a hub for small group work and as a distinct learning environment, fostering a sense of connection and community within the school.
