In the heart of Van Meter, a unique educational model thrives, uniting K‑12 students under one roof. This close-knit culture, cherished by the community, has faced the challenge of growth. Over the years, the original 1927 schoolhouse expanded with six additions, addressing immediate needs but creating a fragmented physical space.
To prepare for a 2023 bond referendum, INVISION crafted a master plan to unify these additions into a cohesive layout. The plan added the necessary classrooms and program spaces. In addition, it restored a sense of place and seamless connection throughout the school. This community-driven effort culminated in an impressive 86% approval on election day.
The project introduced a new secure east entry, concessions, and a weight room to enhance security and functionality. The centerpiece, however, was the educational addition, driven by the themes of “Connect” and “Knit.” A new two-story elementary wing bridged previous additions, resolving dead ends and creating a welcoming front door. This design honored the original 1927 structure, integrating a community performance space that celebrates the rich heritage of the school.
This transformation not only provided much-needed space but also carved out areas for collaboration and community, knitting together the school’s past and future.
